Austin Becomes First City in Texas to Implement Paid Sick Leave Ordinance
By Kelsey Basten
Published on February 20, 2018
On Feb. 16, 2018, the Austin, TX City Council voted in favor of a new paid sick leave ordinance, making Austin the first city in Texas to enact a law requiring paid leave.
The new ordinance requires employers to give employees one hour of earned sick time for every 30 hours worked. The earned sick time would start accruing at the beginning of employment and is able to be carried over at the end of the year.
Also, it allows employees to use the time for:
- Physical and mental illness
- Extended health issues
- Preventative treatment
- Caring for family members who are experiencing any of the above
For employers with 5 or more employees, the ordinance will go into effect on Oct. 1, 2018. However, employers with 5 or less employees have until Oct. 1, 2020 to adjust their policies.
