Get Ready for Updated State Minimum Wage Rates: July 1, 2023

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (June 12, 2023) Eagan, Minn. — Employers across the U.S. are gearing up for the upcoming changes to state minimum wage rates, many set to take effect July 1, 2023.

As this significant date approaches, it is crucial for employers with multiple locations to stay informed about the evolving rates in various states.

While the majority of minimum wage rate increases occur at the city and county levels on July 1 each year, there are a few states where employers should pay close attention to updates. With states like Connecticut, which updated June 1, and Florida (Sept. 30), employers with locations in multiple jurisdictions should be aware of new rates in multiple states.

The following states, along with Washington, D.C., will see (or already have seen) updated minimum wage rates:

• Connecticut
• Florida
• Nevada
• Oregon
• Washington, D.C.

Of course, employers that operate across the U.S. should always keep an eye out for new laws. Take Maryland minimum wage as a recent example of how rates can change at a moment’s notice. And it is worth mentioning that some new minimum wage rates, across many jurisdictions, will require employers to display an updated labor law poster.

It is crucial to note that each state has its own nuances when it comes to the new rates. For instance, Connecticut’s minimum wage update occurred earlier, effective June 1, 2023, when it hit the $15 threshold for standard rates.

Nevada, on the other hand, has separate rates depending on whether employees are offered health benefits, with July 1, 2023, rates set at $10.25 and $11.25, respectively. (However, that provision will go away in 2024 following a successful 2022 ballot measure.)

Oregon’s minimum wage rates vary by county, with higher rates in more densely populated areas. Effective July 1, 2023, rates range from $15.45 in the Portland metro area to $13.20 in non-urban areas. The situation in Oregon also underscores another aspect of employment law: the potential pitfalls for using addresses and ZIP codes to apply minimum wage rates.

Washington, D.C., has a standard rate of $17, while tipped employees will receive a minimum wage of $8, effective July 1, 2023. Still, the nation’s capital also saw an odd situation this year due to a delay in the appointment of a new Speaker of the House.

Lastly, Florida’s minimum wage increases Sept. 30, 2023, with a standard rate of $12 and a tipped wage of $8.98.
