Labor Law Poster Spotlight: Important New Posters from Los Angeles, Massachusetts, and Virginia

A highlight of several recent labor law poster releases that employers should know about, brought to you by the GovDocs Employment Law and Compliance Team.
In this monthly series, the GovDocs Employment Law and Compliance Team highlights three recent labor law poster releases that employers need to know about.
Virginia Covenants Not to Compete Poster
On March 24, 2025, Virgina enacted SB 1218, which expanded who is covered under its covenants not to compete for low wage employees law. Specifically, the bill amended the “low-wage employee” definition.
Originally, Virginia prohibited employers from entering into, enforcing, or threatening to enforce a covenant not to compete with any low-wage employee whose average weekly earnings is less than $1,463.10 per week in 2025. Effective July 1, 2025, the “low-wage employee” definition now includes those entitled to overtime compensations under the Federal Labor Standards Act (FLSA) for any hours worked over 40 hours in a workweek.
Virginia’s Covenants Not to Compete poster is required for all employers and must be posted in the same location where other employee posters are displayed. Virginia’s Department of Labor and Industry further indicated that posting a copy of the code satisfies these posting requirements.
GovDocs Standard Update Program is currently shipping updated posters out to impacted customer locations in Virginia.
Massachusetts Unemployment Insurance Poster
Massachusetts made several updates to its Unemployment Insurance poster. First, the Massachusetts Department of Unemployment Insurance clarified the notice requirement with the following language:
“Your employer must give you a copy of the pamphlet: How to File a Claim for Unemployment Insurance Benefits, within 30 days of your last day of work. This pamphlet is provided to your employer by the Massachusetts Department of Unemployment Assistance (DUA).”
In addition, the Department also updated the section describing how individuals can apply for UI benefits. Now, it provides detailed instructions on how to create an account and apply for benefits online.
The Unemployment Insurance poster in Massachusetts is required to be conspicuously displayed by all employers in the workplace. GovDocs is shipping new posters out to customer locations in the Bay State, and the posters will also be included in GovDocs Intranet Poster Program.
Los Angeles Minimum Wage and Paid Sick Leave Poster
Each year, Los Angeles announces a new minimum wage that takes effect on July 1. Accordingly, the city updates its corresponding Minimum Wage and Paid Sick Leave poster with the new rate and makes any additional changes.
Los Angeles announced its updated minimum wage earlier this year. Los Angeles subsequently released its updated poster with the minimum wage rate increase on July 1, 2025, as $17.87.
In addition, the Paid Sick Leave section was also updated, modifying the language for “72-Hour Cap” to state, “Unused paid sick time accrued by an Employee, whether by front-loading method or by accrual method, shall carry over to the following year of employment and may be capped at a minimum of 72 hours. An Employer may set a higher cap or no cap at all.”
Los Angeles’ Minimum Wage and Paid Sick Leave poster is required for all employers. The Spanish version of the poster is also required for employers with 5% or more Spanish-speaking employees. Both posters updated and are currently shipping out to customers in the GovDocs Update Program.
