Three Spanish Postings Removed from Maine
Published on January 22, 2016
GovDocs confirmed with the Maine Department of Labor that three postings previously offered in Spanish-language versions were removed from use.
The following three Spanish-language versions are no longer available:
- Maine Minimum Wage
- Maine Whistleblowers’ Protection Act
- Maine Video Display Terminal Law
Why Were the Maine Spanish Postings Removed?
According to GovDocs Compliance Counsel, Anne Jakala, Esq., the Maine Department of Labor indicated that the postings were removed due to the lack of requests for them.
That jibes with census data. Maine reports less than 1 percent of residents who speak Spanish at home. That’s fewer than 10,000 people in a state of 1.2 million residents.
However, more than 3 percent of Maine households parlent français, which means Maine has more fluent French-speaking residents than they have Spanish speakers. On average, nearly 20 percent of surveyed households in the U.S. reported speaking a language other than English at home. Maine’s respondents came in significantly lower at only 7.4 percent.
